Mokarrameh, Memories And Dreams
mokarrameh
Director: Ebrahim Mokhtari
France/Iran 1999
48 mins. color BETA SP

This is a poetic tale of a village woman in Iran who begins to paint to overcome the loss of a beloved cow. Her pictures recount  the story of her life, the story of the other wives of her husband and of other women in the village, their married life and their work. Her bitter sweet tales are interwoven with stories told by the older first wife about their shared husband - and she confronts her uncle to ask why she was sold into marriage at such a young age.
Imagination and reality combine in her paintings, giving real insight into traditional Iranian customs.

Tambours Battant (Beating Drums) is a rhythmically hypnotizing journey showing the important placing of music in the social and cultural origins of human beings.  "You have round ones, flat ones, you have very small ones and very big ones like those [musicians] who appeared under our windows in Casablanca." A spiritually spontaneous flow of rhythms and energies in the social fabric of society.
